How We Grow, From Soil to Harvest

People often imagine natural farming is simply farming without chemicals. It is more than that. It is a full way of working with the land, built on a few old ideas that fit together. Here is how a season unfolds on our farm.

It begins with living soil

Before a single seed goes in, we look after the ground. We feed it with Jeevamrut, our homemade microbial tonic, and cover it with a layer of straw and crop leftovers. This cover, which the old farmers call acchadana, keeps the soil moist, softens the sun, and slowly feeds the earth as it breaks down. Under that blanket, the soil stays cool, alive, and full of worms.

Protecting the seed

Every seed we sow is first treated with Beejamrut, a simple natural coating made from cow dung, cow urine, and lime. It shields the young seed and its first tender roots from the diseases that live in the soil, giving each plant a strong and healthy start without any chemical treatment.

Feeding the field through the season

As the crops grow, we return every couple of weeks with more Jeevamrut, given along with the irrigation water. We are never really feeding the plant. We are feeding the millions of tiny lives in the soil, and they in turn feed the roots. We also watch the moisture closely, keeping that gentle balance of air and water in the soil that roots love best.

Working with nature, not against it

We do not reach for a spray at the first sign of trouble. Instead we grow different crops together, invite helpful insects and birds, and use gentle homemade remedies when a plant needs a hand. A farm that is alive and mixed looks after much of itself.

Good food cannot be rushed. It grows in its own time.

When a crop is truly ready, we pick it by hand and bring it to the families we feed while it is still fresh from the field.
